Wedding Traditions

Catherine and I like traditions and plan on starting some of our own with our family (like our holiday one, which we find fun!).  We got to talking about what wedding traditions we wanted to keep, and which are going to get the ax for our big day.  The great thing about having a non-traditional wedding is that you get to make your own rules, which we both enjoy.

After some discussion we decided that we're not going to really see each others dresses before the big day.  Although, she ordered hers and then left the invoice with photo out on the couch for days and also left the photos of her wearing the dress on her camera and then let me borrow it <sigh> so we're going to do our best with that one.  In exchange, I showed her a little corner of my dress, but she really couldn't tell anything.  It's hard when the person you are marrying is also your best friend that you want to share things with, but I think we got it all out of our systems.

We are also going to say goodbye the night before the wedding and not see each other.  The only potential problem is that our venue might need to schedule our rehearsal for the morning of our wedding, which means we'd have to see each other.  We'll try not to enjoy it!

We already have our sixpence (which Catherine referred to as frankincense today) , so we're totally doing the something borrowed, something blue tradition.  And of course, smashing the cake, how could we not!

We're not going to have a first dance, since we're both not dancers but we do want to do the father/daughter dance.

Dads, get out your dancing shoes!

And we both want to throw the bouquet, that was always one of my favorite parts of weddings when I was a kid.

We're trying to keep the fun things we've always enjoyed at other people's weddings.

Are we missing any traditions?  What makes the cut (or not) for your wedding?

  1. I'm going to have to brush up on my dancing skills then! Do you know how to shuffle? What song are we going to dance to?

  2. I don't know the shuffle! We haven't decided songs, but as soon as we know we'll let the dads know!
